Heavy Duty Chaos in Abu Dhabi, UAE

traffic-jamsA fresh bout of traffic chaos is set to hit the centre of Abu Dhabi, following moves to ban heavy vehicles from a major part of the city. Abu Dhabi Municipality (ADM) is closing the heavy-vehicle lane on Al Salam Street. Instead, trucks will be directed to the centre through an alternative route alng Hazza Bin Zayed Street or on to Al Reem Island. Meanwhile the left lane of Mina Road, starting from the intersection of Old Mazda Street in the Mina direction, will be closed for two months from this week (July 29) in order to remove light poles on the road. In addition, ADM and the Police are advising drivers to heed the 4.8m height restriction on the intersection of Al Salam Street and Hazza Bin Zayed Street. For trucks and heavy vehicles going beyond the specified height restriction, the alternative route is through Al Reem Island.

Flyers that shows with the Medicare supplement insurance advertisment at the back that the alternative routes for heavy vehicles are being distributed through various petrol stations in Abu Dhabi as well as in areas surroundingĀ  Al Salam Street. Meanwhile, transport officials warn the drivers who break traffic laws will be penalized accordingly. The Al Salam Street Projects are part of intiatives in line with the Government’s Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 – the long term plan aimed at promoting the economic and social development of the capital. The plans are part of a master initiative to promote Abu Dhabi’s position as a fully international city on a par with major centres around the world.
