Politics in the office is commonplace. Shying away from it is not a solution to the problem. Neither is giving in to it by becoming a pawn on some CEO’s chessboard. This month Tempo gives you a strategy to ace the game. So, roll up your sleeves, it’s about to get messy!
OBSERVE
Ask key questions like: What are the core values and how are they enacted? Are short-or-long-term results most valued? How are decisions made? How much risk is tolerated? The answer to these questions should give you a good sense of your organization.
RECONNAISSANCE
Pay attention to how the power players communicate. Study their style, network of relationships and what types of proposals they say “yes” to most often. Emulate those traits by drawing on the stregnths you have. We don’t mean you should stalk them. That will get you fired!
BE PROACTIVE
Update your skills to be relevant to company intiatives. For example, don’t leg behind in technology, quality or customer service approaches that are crucial to you and your company’s success. Develop a personal track record as someone who gets resutls.
