The Advisor: Fitness
I recently went for a health check up to assess my fitness before I begin training for my first marathon. I was given a figure called a BMI – what is this and what does it mean?
BMI (body mass index) is a screening tool used to measure weight relative to height. While BMI does not measure body fat directly, it has been shown to correlate to measures of body fat, such as underwater weighing, and is considered an accurate alternative for body fat measurement. With a simple formula, you can calculate your own BMI.
How Is BMI Calculated?
To calculate your BMI, you will need to divide your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared and multiply that by 703. The formula is: weight / [height (in inches)]2 x 703.
Although using BMI is s useful tool it can have its flaws. Taken an individual who has a healthy percentage of body fat but is quite muscular; because muscle weighs more than fat this individual could be classed as overweight or even obese because he is “too heavy” for his height. Rugby players are a good example of this.
The same works the other way though a person may have a normal percent of body fat but be classed as underweight as the person is not very muscular. For that, I myself is consulting a diet pill reviews as I actually have a little bit high BMI than my height.
So, for those of you who are curious about your BMI better consult your dietician doctors now before its too late for you to reduce it. Keep in mind that health is our only wealth!
